Global Flooding Continues, Adding to Death Toll, Rendering More Homeless

(WP) The onslaught of flooding this year shows no sign of slowing as reports of deadly deluge continue to come in from around the globe.


Over 400 villages in the state of Uttar Pradesh flooded after several rivers in India broke their banks recently. The disaster has left 9 dead so far. Excess rainfall is to blame.

About 100 families in Ethiopia's Afar Region have been displaced due to floods caused from overflows of the Awash River. The deluge has damaged more than 50 hectares of farmland.


In China, more than 80,000 residents in the Sichuan Province have been forced to evacuate after tributaries of the Fujiang, Jialing and Qujiang rivers swelled from heavy rainfall. There are no reports yet of injuries or deaths.

At least one person is missing today in Turkey as severe floods and landslides hammer the Black Sea region. Emergency teams are carrying out numerous rescue missions in the area, even using helicopters in some situations. The missing person disappeared after her home was swept away by flash flooding in the Bartin Province. The search is ongoing.

In the US, heavy rains caused severe flash flooding in Omaha, Nebraska a few days ago. Floodlist.com reported that "in some of the worst flooding in 20 years, areas of downtown Omaha were under water after rain flowed to lower lying areas of the city. Several motorists and their vehicles were left stranded in the water, while dozens of parked cars were also damaged."


UPDATE 8/12/2021: Thousands have now been affected after floods and rain destroy homes in The Central African Republic. Nearly 3,000 people are said to be in need of emergency aid. According to Floodlist, heavy rainfall caused the flooding, and led to the collapse of walls and roofs of some 100 homes. This is the second such event to strike the area in recent weeks.
