End Times News & Commentary

Dissenting Opinions

There's a lot of arguing going on in Christian circles this week. Some believers think that the rapture is about to happen. Literally. Like this weekend. Given the chaotic state of the world it's not a far stretch of the imagination. With record-breaking weather events, raging wildfires, economic upheaval, political animosity, COVID-19, riots and abundant lawlessness, the timing seems pretty ripe for the departure of the church. Let's not forget the other big events this week. An historic peace agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was just signed. Plus, the Feast of Trumpets, a major Jewish holiday, falls over the weekend.

But other believers don't think it's necessary to get our hopes up yet. After all, no man will know the day or the hour. Jesus said so himself. Date-setting is a big no-no, and those on that side of the debate are quick to tell you so. They also point out the dangers of giving false hope. A non-event might cause new Christians to lose faith, for instance. Or, more vulnerable believers might become deeply depressed. Then there's always the scoffers to contend with.

Rather than getting entangled in debate about prophetic interpretation, I'll be spending this weekend as I always do: waiting for that blessed hope--the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ (Titus 2:13). If he should appear in the clouds and I hear the trumpet blast, I'm ready! But if the appointed time is not yet upon us, I'll continue to occupy. I'll continue to look for ways to glorify God in everything I do. My spirit is at peace.
